Option Courses

 English - Regular Program

Every effort will be made to get you into your preferred choice but due to circumstances you may be assigned your 3rd or 4th choice and so on. Awarding your selection choice is on a first-come first-served basis. *Option courses offered are dependent on the level of student interest. Therefore, not all courses will be offered.

Grade 7: Option Form

All grade seven students will be registered in Band (Full Term) and French (Full Term).
Students will receive an additional 2 (single semester) option subjects. Please number your preferred choices 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. 

Grade 8: Option Form

All grade 8 students will continue to be registered in the French (Second Language) Program for the full year. This should be a continuation from the grade 7 Language Program.

Grade 9: Option Form

All grade 9 students will be enrolled in the French 9 (Second Language) Program for the full year. This is a continuation from the Grade 8 French Language Program.

 Spanish Program

Grade 7: Option Form

All grade seven Spanish students will participate in Spanish Drama (for one half-term) with instruction in Spanish.

Grade 8: Option Form

All grade eight Spanish students will continue to be enrolled in Spanish Drama (for one half-term) with instruction in Spanish.

Grade 9: Option Form

All grade nine Spanish students will continue to be enrolled in Spanish Drama (for one half-term) with instruction in Spanish.

 Ukrainian Program

Grade 7: Option Form

All grade seven Ukrainian students will participate in Foods/Culinary Arts (for one half-term) with instruction in Ukrainian. Please choose one of the following additional full year courses:
 Band or  French

Grade 8: Option Form

All grade 8 Ukrainian students will participate in Ukrainian Foods/Culinary Arts (for one half-term) with instruction in Ukrainian.

Grade 9: Option Form

All grade 9 Ukrainian students will participate in Ukrainian Foods/Culinary Arts (for one half-term) with instruction in Ukrainian.

 

GRADE 7 OPTION SELECTIONS 

A brief description of complementary courses is listed below. Once students are scheduled into option classes, there will be no changes, so please choose carefully. Every effort will be made to try to schedule students into their chosen options. Scheduling will occur on a first-come first-served basis. OPTIONS SUBJECT TO CHANGE, DEPENDENT ON ENROLMENT NUMBERS. 

Art  – Art is intended to expand the visual and kinesthetic creativity within the student. This creativity will continue to become part of their development as an individual throughout the educational years. As education is a lifelong process, so too is the creative process. Fostering creativity leads to a better understanding of the world, a world in which the student’s future lies. 

Construction - Students participating in this course will be introduced to basic lab safety, hand tool safety and operations. One goal in the Career Technology Foundations program is to provide a successful learning experience for all students through a hands-on approach. Along with a variety of smaller wood-working projects, students will construct a wooden motivational sign and a Squirrel Picnic Table! 

Communication Technology – Discover and develop skills for relaying a message effectively using various forms of media, including animation, print, photography and audio/visual. 

Cosmetology/Esthetics - Experience the role of personal grooming and learn the various skills involved in the hairstyling trade, such as haircutting, texturizing, coloring, and styling. We will also investigate skin care and treatments, including facials, cosmetic make- up services, and nail art. 

Drama - Drama is a creative and lively option in which we explore movement, speech, and performance. Students will gain valuable experience with public speaking and working cooperatively with all classmates. In each grade, a variety of activities are introduced, such as storytelling, stage fighting, mime, improvisation, script writing…and much more! 

Fashion Studies – Design, manufacture, and market clothing/textile products as well as study the history, sociology and economics of clothing and textile arts. 

Foods/Culinary Arts – Students will develop an appreciation for the nature of food, nutrition and health, management, safety, sanitation and equipment, preparation of food, presentation and service, consumerism/food selection, multicultural aspects of food, and food ecology. Students learn basic cooking and meal planning skills. 

French – French as a Second Language is a full year course that enables students to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to communicate in French in a variety of school, home, and leisure settings. Students will master various elements of the French language, which will enable them to communicate orally and in written form. In addition, students will gain an appreciation of Francophone culture. 

Instrumental Music (Band) – The following is a list of instruments, one of which will be selected by each student for use in the program: flute, clarinet, alto & tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone, and tuba.

Environmental & Outdoor Education – Students will focus on the areas of communication, teamwork, and cooperation while acquiring basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes for outdoor experiences in all seasons, developing awareness and appreciation of living things and basic ecological processes while participating in environmentally responsible activities in outdoor environments.

Film Studies – Examining the cultural influence and value of film in our society; thinking critically about films in terms of content, filming techniques and theme.

Students learn basic cooking and meal planning skills.

Physical Education Leadership- The Physical Education Leadership course is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of key principles related to human anatomy, physical fitness, strength training, nutrition, and overall sports performance. In addition, the program will provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to be effective young leaders. Students will lead and organize recreational activities in the school within the context of physical education.
